LANDSHILOH · RURAL LAND AND OFF-GRID PLANNING
An off-grid dependency plan shows how one service relies on another. This page focuses on those relationships so a collection of individually attractive systems is not mistaken for a workable operating arrangement.
Design a service system, not a collection of equipment
Draw the dependencies between water, power, wastewater, communications and access. A well pump may need power; delivery vehicles may need a maintained road; equipment servicing may need safe access while you are absent. One component can affect several activities at once. Describe the intended occupancy and operating pattern before requesting designs.
Assign each service a primary arrangement, maintenance plan and response to interruption. A backup should be evaluated for its own dependencies. Two systems relying on the same damaged road or power source may not provide the independence you expect.
Put this subject into practice
Draw connections between the components needed for the actual occupancy pattern. Mark shared dependencies such as power, access or a single provider. Ask the relevant designers to confirm how a component interruption would affect other essential functions.
Keep the dependency plan with the project version. A change in demand, location or operating season may affect several linked systems. Review the complete arrangement after a material change rather than adjusting one quotation in isolation.
Working record
Create a separate record for this subject so its findings are not mixed with unrelated approvals or investigations. Keep the actual source, review date and responsible person with each entry.

Illustrative example
A pump and communications equipment both depend on one power arrangement. Listing each as having a backup plan does not establish independence if the backup arrangements share the same unresolved dependency.
Fictional example for explaining the process, not a listing, valuation or approval.
Is off-grid ownership automatically cheaper?
Compare complete installation, replacement, maintenance, travel and service costs against alternatives for the same intended use. A low recurring utility bill does not describe the whole ownership cost.
